Her name was Wahaisia Solomon, she was more affectionately known as Poppy. We met her when she was just 13 years old. She became the heart and soul of the BYKR BROZ MC. It began as a simple request from Beast, the Vice President of our club. He said she had cancer and it seemed serious. She had a very simple request, to take a ride with a motorcycle club. Who would have known that responding to two simple requests could make such a monumental impact on the lives of so many people, particularly this rag tag bunch of hard-core, Harley riding, drinking, partying, Hell-raising bikers?
To the dismay of all who lived there, a long line of bikes pulled into the apartment complex where she lived. None of us really knew what to expect. Beast had briefed us all about resisting the urge to show too much emotion or mention the seriousness of her condition. We entered the parking lot and parked our bikes exactly as we had planned. As we dismounted our bikes and approached the first-floor balcony of the apartment where she lived, we were all taken aback at what we observed: the most beautiful, radiant, positive, smiling child you have ever seen.
Now, she WAS sitting in her wheelchair, having recently had her right leg amputated. Her foot was somehow attached at the knee for some medical reason unknown to us. The whole event somewhat “undid” the various members of our club, but we honored the instruction of our VP to control our emotions and comments. Holding back my own emotions, I looked to each individual in the ride. Men who I had known and ridden with for years and never seen rattled, but now clearly shaken and moved.
As was the plan, Beast would pick her up, carry her to my bike, and put her on it. My bike was in the lead. As I sat on my bike and turned around, I could not help but to be overwhelmed by the massive smile that was on Poppy’s face. She was clearly thrilled by the idea that these bikers were there for her. It was then that I noticed Beast, “Mr. Everyone try not to show too much emotion”, was crying like a baby. Behind him, to the individual, every single BRO was, shall we say, “CRYING BIG!” So, I said to myself, “Heck with it. If they can, I can!” It was a difficult but extremely rewarding and memorable ride, and the beginning of a long-term relationship between Poppy and the BYKR BROZ MC.
We grew to love Poppy very much and miss her terribly. She taught us so much about strength and positivity. We will NEVER forget her.
She became our first and so far, only “HONORARY BYKR BRO.” Her mother still proudly displays her colors in their home. She passed away in October 2017. She is and always will be a BYKR BRO, because we truly believe BYKR BROZ FOREVER, FOREVER BYKR BROZ!
